Self-Awareness
October · Word of the Month
October's word is SELF-AWARENESS — actively noticing your surroundings, your instincts, and your environment, rather than moving through them on autopilot. It's a quieter, more valuable safety skill than most people realize.
🛡️ Awareness as a safety skill
Self-defense moves matter, but self-awareness prevents most problems from ever reaching the point where you'd need them. Noticing your surroundings and trusting your instincts is genuinely the first line of defense.
📖 Examples for this age
- ●Making a specific plan for what to do if separated from a parent in public
- ●Trusting an instinct even without being able to fully explain it
- ●Actively noticing an environment instead of moving through it distracted
- ●Understanding why awareness might matter more than physical self-defense
💬 Try asking your child
- ●Why might self-awareness be even more valuable than knowing self-defense moves?
- ●What would you do if you got separated from a parent in a busy public place?
- ●Has your instinct ever warned you about something before you could explain exactly why?
💡 Try This At Home
Walk through a real "what would you do if..." scenario together (getting separated in a store, a stranger approaching) — rehearsed plans work far better in the moment than instructions given only once, abstractly.
"The best fight is the one you avoid." Talk about what self-awareness has to do with avoiding problems before they start.
