Self-Awareness
October · Word of the Month
This month's word is SELF-AWARENESS. Self-awareness means noticing what's happening around you — your environment, your instincts, and how to stay safe — instead of moving through the world on autopilot.
🛡️ What is self-awareness?
Self-awareness starts with noticing your surroundings (your environment) and trusting your gut feelings (instinct). Both help keep kids safe — often before they can even explain exactly why something feels off.
📖 Examples for this age
- ●Noticing things around the house that need extra care
- ●Trusting an instinct that something feels wrong
- ●Making a plan for a safe Halloween or night out
- ●Paying attention to your surroundings instead of zoning out
💬 Try asking your child
- ●What are some things you need to be aware of around your house?
- ●How can our instincts help us avoid danger?
- ●How can self-awareness be even better than knowing self-defense moves?
💡 Try This At Home
Teach your child to trust their gut without needing to justify it — "if something feels wrong, that's enough of a reason to tell a grown-up," no further explanation required.
"The best fight is the one you avoid." Talk about what noticing your surroundings has to do with that.
