Self-Awareness
October · Word of the Month
This month's word is SELF-AWARENESS — actively noticing your surroundings, your instincts, and your environment. In practice, this is one of the most underrated personal safety skills, often more valuable than physical self-defense training itself.
🛡️ Instinct vs. social politeness
Preteens are often trained by social norms to prioritize not seeming rude over trusting a real instinct. Learning to override "but that would be awkward" when something genuinely feels wrong is a skill worth naming and practicing directly.
🧠 Why this matters at this age
Preteens are gaining more independence — walking places alone, being dropped off without a parent nearby — right at the age when awareness matters most and adult supervision is naturally decreasing.
💬 Try asking your child
- ●Why might self-awareness be more valuable, in practice, than physical self-defense skills?
- ●Have you ever ignored your instinct because you didn't want to seem rude or make things awkward?
- ●Write a specific, step-by-step plan for what you'd do if a situation starts to feel unsafe.
💡 Try This At Home
Give explicit permission to be "rude" in service of safety — leaving a situation abruptly, saying no firmly, walking away without explaining. Preteens often need to hear directly that this is allowed.
"The best fight is the one you avoid." Apply this to a social situation, not just a physical one.
