Integrity
November · Word of the Month
This month's word is INTEGRITY — acting according to your own genuine values, especially when it's costly or when no one is watching. Integrity is only ever tested in moments where cutting corners is actually possible.
🤝 Integrity vs. rigidity
Integrity isn't the same as never compromising. It's staying true to your core values while still being able to genuinely listen and adjust on things that aren't core values. Confusing the two can make a kid stubborn instead of principled.
🧠 Why this matters at this age
Preteens increasingly notice when their own values differ from their friend group's, and navigating that gap — without either abandoning their values or becoming rigidly separate from their peers — is a genuinely hard, important skill.
💬 Try asking your child
- ●What's the difference between integrity and simply being rigid or unwilling to compromise?
- ●Are there values you hold that differ from what your friend group seems to value? How do you navigate that?
- ●Have you ever known the right thing to do but lacked the courage to actually do it?
💡 Try This At Home
When your child admits they lacked courage in a past moment, resist immediate reassurance ("it's fine, don't worry about it"). Sit with the discomfort together first — that's where real growth in courage tends to come from.
"Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching." Ask your child to name a real, current example — not a hypothetical one.
