Confidence
March · Word of the Month
March's word is CONFIDENCE — trust in your own abilities that comes from evidence, not wishful thinking. The healthiest kind of confidence is built through real practice, not empty praise.
🥋 Confidence vs. arrogance
Confidence says "I've worked at this, and I trust myself." Arrogance says "I'm just better, I don't need to work at it." The difference is evidence: confidence is earned through practice; arrogance skips that step entirely.
📖 Examples for this age
- ●Performing a form confidently because it's been drilled many times
- ●Trying out for a team despite the risk of not making it
- ●Speaking up in class with a well-reasoned answer
- ●Staying enthusiastic through a tough week of training
💬 Try asking your child
- ●What's something you're confident about because of real work you put in?
- ●Have you ever 'faked' confidence you didn't feel — what happened?
- ●What's the difference between confidence and arrogance, to you?
💡 Try This At Home
Praise the process, not the trait. "You've drilled that so many times, no wonder it looks confident" reinforces evidence-based confidence far better than "you're so talented."
"Confidence is the residue of work done." Ask your child what work is behind something they feel confident about.
