Self-Esteem
June · Word of the Month
June's word is SELF-ESTEEM — a stable sense of your own worth that doesn't depend on winning or being praised. Healthy self-esteem is quieter and sturdier than it looks.
🌟 Healthy vs. fragile self-esteem
Self-esteem that depends on constantly winning or being praised is fragile — it collapses the moment success stops. Healthy self-esteem comes from knowing your own character and effort, which stays steady even after a loss.
📖 Examples for this age
- ●Describing your character in words, not just your achievements
- ●Rewriting a harsh inner critic into a supportive coach's voice
- ●Accomplishing something and feeling proud without needing outside validation
- ●Noticing when comparison to others distorts self-worth
💬 Try asking your child
- ●Use 5 words to describe your personality or character, not how you look.
- ●If you say bad things about yourself, how does it affect how others see you?
- ●Describe a recent moment your inner voice was harsh on you — what would a supportive coach have said instead?
💡 Try This At Home
When your child speaks harshly about themselves, resist the urge to argue them out of it ("That's not true!"). Instead, ask them to imagine what a supportive coach would say in that exact moment — it builds the skill of self-compassion.
"Your inner voice should sound like your best coach, not your harshest critic." Practice that rewrite together.
