Perseverance
February · Word of the Month
February's word is PERSEVERANCE — steady persistence in a course of action, especially in spite of difficulties or obstacles. The difference between someone who achieves their goals and someone who doesn't is often not talent. It's perseverance.
🥋 Focus, commitment, and obstacles
These three ideas work as a system: Focus gets you started and keeps you on task. Commitment keeps you showing up even on days you don't feel like it. Perseverance is specifically what shows up at the moment an obstacle appears and you have to decide whether to push through or stop.
📖 Examples for this age
- ●Pushing through a tough belt test
- ●Working through a difficult math concept
- ●Staying committed to a team even after a loss
- ●Improving a skill that doesn't come naturally
💬 Try asking your child
- ●What's something you're tempted to quit right now? What's making it hard specifically?
- ●Tell me about an obstacle you got through. What did you actually do, step by step?
- ●Is there a difference between perseverance and stubbornness? What's the difference?
- ●What's a commitment you've kept even on a day you didn't want to?
💡 Try This At Home
Praise the process, not just the outcome. Instead of 'great job, you got it,' try 'I noticed you kept trying different approaches until it worked — that's exactly what perseverance looks like.'
"Obstacles don't block the path. They ARE the path." Can your child think of an obstacle that actually taught them something valuable?
