Perseverance
February · Word of the Month
This month's word is PERSEVERANCE. Perseverance means continuing to try, even when something is difficult or frustrating, instead of giving up. It's the quality that turns a white belt into a black belt over time.
🥋 What is perseverance?
You can't persevere at something you've stopped paying attention to. Focus means concentrating on the task in front of you. Commitment means sticking with something even when it's not fun anymore. Perseverance is what keeps you going when obstacles appear.
📖 Examples for this age
- ●Practicing a sport skill that isn't easy yet
- ●Sounding out a hard word while reading
- ●Finishing a school project that takes several days
- ●Earning the next stripe even after a few tough tries
💬 Try asking your child
- ●What is something you almost gave up on, but didn't?
- ●What helps you focus when something is boring or hard?
- ●What's a promise or commitment you've kept even when it was tough?
- ●What gets in the way of you finishing something you start?
💡 Try This At Home
When your child wants to quit something, ask questions instead of immediately allowing or forbidding it: 'What's making this hard right now?' 'What would happen if you tried one more time?' Help them name the obstacle specifically.
"Obstacles don't block the path. They ARE the path." Talk about what this means with a recent example.
