Self-Control
August · Word of the Month
August's word is SELF-CONTROL — the ability to manage impulses and reactions, especially when it's hardest. Self-control, discipline, and patience are related but distinct: discipline gets you to show up, patience helps you wait, self-control governs how you react in the moment.
🛑 Self-control under real difficulty
Anyone can show self-control when nothing is testing them. The real skill is staying in control during genuine frustration — like weeks of practicing a technique that still isn't landing.
📖 Examples for this age
- ●Staying calm through weeks of slow progress on a skill
- ●Taking responsibility for a mistake beyond just saying sorry
- ●Identifying your own hardest self-control situation honestly
- ●Choosing a long-term goal over a short-term impulse
💬 Try asking your child
- ●What's the hardest situation for you, personally, to maintain self-control in?
- ●Give a specific example of discipline in your training, not just 'I practice.'
- ●Describe a time patience actually paid off for you.
