Self-Control
August · Word of the Month
This month's word is SELF-CONTROL. Self-control means managing your reactions, staying disciplined in practice, and being patient — three skills Taekwondo class builds every single time your child steps on the mat.
🛑 What is self-control?
Self-control has a few working parts: discipline (doing what you're supposed to, even without motivation), patience (waiting calmly), and responsibility (owning your actions). All three get practiced constantly in Taekwondo training.
📖 Examples for this age
- ●Staying focused during a long class
- ●Waiting patiently for a turn to demonstrate
- ●Taking responsibility for a mistake without excuses
- ●Reacting calmly instead of getting frustrated
💬 Try asking your child
- ●How can you show self-control during Taekwondo class?
- ●What is discipline, and how does it help us reach our goals?
- ●Describe a time you used self-control even though you wanted to react differently.
💡 Try This At Home
When your child loses self-control at home, resist a lecture in the heated moment. Wait until things are calm, then walk through what a self-controlled response could have looked like instead — that's when the lesson actually sticks.
"Discipline is doing it even when you don't feel like it." Name one thing your family is disciplined about together.
